Víctor Mesa Jr. was named American League Player of the Week on 14 September 2026, for the week of 7–13 September. It is the first major league Player of the Week award of his career, and it arrived thirteen days after the Tampa Bay Rays recalled him from Triple-A Durham.

The week: 7–13 September 2026
Mesa Jr. played six games, three against the Atlanta Braves and three against the Houston Astros. He reached base in all six. The home runs came on 9, 10 and 11 September — the last of them in a single plate appearance on the 10th, his only trip to the plate that day.

Fourteen times on base in twenty-two plate appearances. The .636 on-base percentage is the figure the award citation led with, and it is the one that holds up: he was not merely hot, he was close to unretirable.
Havana, and the Mesa name
Mesa Jr. was born in Havana on 8 September 2001 — he turned 25 during the week he won the award. His birthplace is confirmed in the MLB Stats API record, which is the standard this site applies before counting anyone as Cuban-born.
The surname carries weight in Cuba that it does not carry in the United States. His father, Víctor Mesa, was one of the defining outfielders of the Serie Nacional and later managed the Cuban national team. To a reader in Havana, “Mesa Jr.” needs no explanation. To a reader in Tampa, it is a name on a transaction wire.
He was not the more celebrated of the two brothers when they left. On 22 October 2018 the Miami Marlins signed both Víctor Víctor Mesa, then 22, and Víctor Mesa Jr., then 17, to minor league contracts on the same day — one of the highest-profile Cuban signings of that international period. The older brother was the prize. He has still never appeared in a major league game. The younger one debuted on 26 May 2025.
The road through Miami
The 2025 season gave Mesa Jr. 16 games and 32 at-bats with the Marlins, and he hit .188 with one home run. On 3 February 2026 Miami designated him for assignment. Three days later, on 6 February, they traded him to the Tampa Bay Rays for infielder Angel Brachi.
The first half of 2026 did not suggest what was coming. Through 6 July he was hitting .171 with a .584 OPS in 28 games. On 26 August the Rays optioned him to Triple-A Durham. He was recalled on 1 September. Thirteen days after that, he was the best hitter in the American League.

Ten home runs and seven stolen bases in 41 games is a genuine power-speed run, and the slugging figure is the one that separates it from a hot streak in batting average. Both lines are computed from his game log rather than taken from a leaderboard, so they can be checked game by game.
For the full season through 15 September he is at 69 games, .257/.326/.510, an .836 OPS, 13 home runs, 30 RBI and nine stolen bases. The Rays are 91-59 and have clinched a postseason place at the top of the American League East.
Where it sits in the 2026 Cuban season
2026 is already the deepest year Cuban-born players have had in the major leagues, and Mesa Jr. is a late addition to it rather than one of its headline names — which is rather the point. The record year is not being carried by seven All-Stars alone; it is being filled out by players like this, who were on a Triple-A roster three weeks ago.
