Cuba’s 65th Serie Nacional begins on 4 October 2026, and it will be one of the shortest seasons in the league’s history. Each team plays 44 games instead of the usual 75-plus, the 16 clubs have been split into two geographic zones and four groups, and the whole structure has been rebuilt around a single constraint: the country cannot afford the fuel to move teams up and down the island the way it used to.
The Cuban Baseball and Softball Federation announced the format on 18 August at the Adolfo Luque room of the Estadio Latinoamericano in Havana. Below is what changes, who plays whom, and every date confirmed so far.

Why Cuba cut the season to 44 games
This is a logistics decision before it is a baseball decision. Cuba’s energy and fuel situation through 2026 has made long-distance travel the most expensive part of running a national league, and the old format — where a Pinar del Río side might travel the length of the island for a three-game set against Guantánamo — is exactly the thing the federation can no longer pay for.
The new structure attacks that directly. By grouping teams with their nearest neighbours and keeping most of the season inside a single zone, the league cuts total bus mileage sharply without cutting the number of teams. Subseries also run longer — four or five games in one city instead of three — so each trip covers more baseball. The trade-off is real, and Cuban fans have already noticed it: 44 games is a small sample. Statistical titles will be decided over fewer at-bats, a hot September will matter more than it used to, and a team that loses two subseries early has far less room to recover than it did over a 75-game schedule.
The four groups
The 16 teams are divided into an Occidental (western) zone and an Oriental (eastern) zone, each split into two groups of four.

Two placements are worth flagging. Sancti Spíritus sits in the Oriental zone despite being a central province — geographically it is a borderline call, and it puts the Gallos in a group with Las Tunas and Ciego de Ávila rather than with Villa Clara and Cienfuegos. And Matanzas, the defending champion, is grouped with Villa Clara, which makes Group B the hardest four-team pool on paper.
How the 44 games break down
The season runs in two stages, and the arithmetic is exact:

Note what this means: no team plays a single regular-season game against the other zone. An Industriales fan will not see their side face Santiago de Cuba until, and unless, both reach the final. That is the sharpest break from the round-robin format of recent seasons, and it is the clearest sign of how much the travel budget shaped this calendar.
The playoff format, explained
Eight teams qualify — the top four from each zone — and each zone runs its own bracket using the Page playoff system. If you have not seen it before, it is a double-chance format that rewards finishing high:
- Upper semifinal: the zone’s 1st seed plays the 2nd seed, best-of-three.
- Lower semifinal: the 3rd seed plays the 4th seed, best-of-three. The loser is eliminated.
- Preliminary final: the loser of the upper semifinal plays the winner of the lower semifinal, best-of-three.
- Zone final: the winner of the upper semifinal plays the winner of step 3.
The practical effect is that a team finishing first or second gets a second life — lose the upper semifinal and you drop into the preliminary final rather than going home. Third and fourth place get no such cushion. In a 44-game season where a single bad subserie can cost you two places in the table, that seeding cushion is worth a great deal.
The two zone champions then meet in a best-of-seven final for the national title.

What to watch
Matanzas arrive as champions. They swept Las Tunas 4–0 in the 64th Serie Nacional final in February and went on to represent Cuba at the Baseball Champions League Americas in Mexico City. They now sit in the toughest group in the league.
The short season favours pitching depth in an unusual way. Four- and five-game subseries against the same opponent, back to back, put more strain on a rotation than scattered three-game sets. Clubs with five usable starters will look much better in November than clubs with three good ones.
Regional rivalries carry more weight than ever. Twenty-four of a team’s 44 games come against the same three opponents. Pinar del Río v Industriales, Las Tunas v Ciego de Ávila and Santiago v Guantánamo are now, in effect, the season.
