Pedro León received the biggest signing bonus of 2021’s International signing period. The Houston Astros invested $4 million in the Mayabeque Huracanes outfielder. Houston has also invited León to Major League Spring Training Camp. It is unlikely he will start the season in the Majors, but many think he will contribute in The Bigs in 2021.
Get Inside the Cuba Dugout via Youtube and take an in depth look at the five tool player from Mayabeque. The youngster spent a short time playing in Cuba. His power and overall skilled impressed in his short sample though. León signing with the Astros continues a trend. The Houston Astros and Chicago White Sox have been stock piling young Cuban talent in recent years. The 2021 signing period was no different as Chicago acquired Outfielder Yoelqui Céspedes and Pitcher Norge Vera. León is the highest profile Cuban for Houston but they also took a chance on Villa Clara’s Norel Gonzalez.
Norel Gonzalez is a 26 year old First baseman/Corner outfielder from Villa Clara. He left Cuba in some part due to frustration at the lack of opportunity with the National Team. In his 5 year Cuban career he has shown solid contact skills but not the power preferred for first base in the Major Leagues. I have drawn the MLB comparison to Doug Mientkiewicz formerly of the Minnesota Twins. Gonzalez is expected to begin 2021 in Double A.
