Yoelqui Céspedes Is Double A Bound

Jim Callis is reporting that Yoelqui Céspedes is Double A Bound in 2021. The 23 year old from Granma is currently with the clubs extended spring training squad. He is awaiting the resolution of a visa issue but isn’t expected to miss extended time.

Céspedes was ranked by many as the number one international prospect when he signed this past January. The White Sox gave him one of the larger bonuses of the period at $2 million. Adding Yoennis Céspedes younger brother to the Birmingham Barons roster might indicate that Chicago has plans for him to appear on the South Side at some point in 2021. Many feel Double A is in fact the top minor league or at least the best spot for top prospects. Céspedes has not seen consistent playing time since June 2019 when he walked away from the Cuban National Team during their tour of the CanAm league.

The young athletic outfielder has spent the majority of his time in right field and definitely has the arm for the position. Scouts do believe he has the natural speed and instincts to play centre though. It appears his path to The Show in Centre is blocked by fellow countryman Luis Robert. Longer term it might still be. But with an explosive early showing, Céspedes could tantalize the White Sox into an early call up. Robert might be done for the season as he is nursing a grade 3 strain to his hip flexor.
