On Wednesday, 7 October 2026, at the Estadio Latinoamericano in Havana, Pinar del Río second baseman Juan Manuel Pérez hit five doubles against Industriales. No hitter in Cuba’s domestic championships had ever hit more than four in a game. The old mark was set by Juan Carlos Millán on 9 March 1989 and had stood for 37 years.
Pérez went 5-for-6 with five runs scored and four runs batted in as the Vegueros won 17–12, taking the four-game opening subseries in Havana three games to one. The five doubles also matched the Cuban record for extra-base hits in a game, which only two men had reached before him. This is the full record in English, with the major league context, and two dates that the Cuban coverage gets wrong.
The game: Pinar del Río 17, Industriales 12
It was the fourth game of the series and the third straight Pinar del Río win at the Latinoamericano. The Vegueros scored in each of the first four innings and finished with 24 hits. Industriales scored six in the first inning and still lost by five.
| Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | R | H | E |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pinar del Río | 3 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 17 | 24 | 1 |
| Industriales | 6 | 1 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 12 | 15 | 1 |
Serie Nacional 65, Estadio Latinoamericano, 7 October 2026. Winning pitcher Yancarlos García (Pinar del Río); losing pitcher Lismay Ferrales (Industriales). Box score: Béisbol en Cuba.
Pérez’s line: 6 at-bats, 5 runs, 5 hits, 5 doubles, 4 RBI. He had nine hits in the four-game series, which put him at the top of the Serie Nacional hits list after the first subseries.
The Cuban record: from four doubles to five
Before 7 October the single-game record was four doubles. Millán set it first, playing first base for Agropecuarios against Las Villas in the XV Serie Selectiva on 9 March 1989. Granma counts 12 hitters who matched it in the 37 years that followed. Béisbol en Cuba counts 13 occasions, so at least one of them did it twice.
Who had four
Granma, OnCuba and Béisbol en Cuba all name these hitters among the twelve:
| Hitter | Note |
|---|---|
| Juan Carlos Millán | The first: Agropecuarios v Las Villas, XV Serie Selectiva, 9 March 1989 |
| Eduardo Paret | |
| Jorge Luis Toca | |
| Yobal Dueñas | |
| Danel Castro | |
| Ariel Borrero | Villa Clara v Las Tunas, 27 December 2008 (four doubles and a home run) |
| Edilse Silva | The most recent, in 2024 |
Names confirmed by at least two of Granma (8 October), OnCuba (8 October) and Béisbol en Cuba (8 October). Héctor Olivera is named by Béisbol en Cuba and OnCuba but not by Granma. OnCuba’s fuller list adds four more names that we have not been able to confirm from a second source, so they are not printed here.
Silva plays for Santiago de Cuba, which swept Guantánamo in the same opening week and was the only unbeaten team after the first subseries.
Five extra-base hits: now three times in 58 years
Five doubles are also five extra-base hits, which ties the other Cuban single-game record. It has now been done three times.
| Date | Hitter | Game | Extra-base hits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 December 1968 | Elpidio Mancebo | v Matanzas | 2 doubles, 3 home runs |
| 27 December 2008 | Ariel Borrero | Villa Clara v Las Tunas | 4 doubles, 1 home run |
| 7 October 2026 | Juan Manuel Pérez | Pinar del Río v Industriales | 5 doubles |
Sources: Béisbol en Cuba and OnCuba, 8 October 2026; Granma, 8 October 2026 (three occasions in almost 60 years).
Pérez is the only one of the three whose five were all doubles.
How it compares with the major leagues
No major league player has hit five doubles in a game. The MLB single-game record is four, and more than 50 players have reached it.
In affiliated professional baseball, there is one five-double game on record. John Garcia, a Dominican catcher for the Asheville Tourists (High-A South Atlantic League, Houston Astros system), went 5-for-6 with five doubles in an 18–8 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods at McCormick Field on 5 June 2024. MiLB.com called it a professional baseball record. OnCuba quotes the Cuban statistician Benigno Daquinta as saying that Garcia’s is the only earlier five-double game he knows of in organized baseball.
The major league record for extra-base hits in a game is five, the same as the Cuban mark Pérez tied. The Cuban accounts cite Lou Boudreau, who hit a home run and four doubles for Cleveland at Fenway Park in the first game of a doubleheader in 1946, an 11–10 Boston win in which Ted Williams hit three home runs. In the second game, Boudreau, Cleveland’s shortstop and manager, put on his shift against Williams for the first time.
The Cuban-born member of the club
Both Cuban accounts note that Adolis García, born in Ciego de Ávila, is among the major leaguers with five extra-base hits in a game. The MLB box score confirms it. On 22 April 2023, playing for the Texas Rangers against the Oakland Athletics at Globe Life Field, García went 5-for-5 with two doubles and three home runs, drove in eight runs and scored five in an 18–3 win.
Two dates the Cuban coverage gets wrong
The record itself is not in doubt. Two of the dates used to frame it are wrong.
- Boudreau’s game was on 14 July 1946, not 4 July. Béisbol en Cuba and OnCuba both give 4 July. The SABR Games Project account of the doubleheader and Wikipedia’s Boudreau entry both date it 14 July 1946.
- John Garcia’s five-double game was on 5 June 2024, not 4 June. Béisbol en Cuba and OnCuba both give 4 June. The MiLB.com game story is dated 5 June 2024, and the MLB Stats API lists the game’s official date as 5 June 2024.
Neither changes what Pérez did. They are corrected here because both wrong dates already appear in more than one outlet.
Who Juan Manuel Pérez is
Pérez is from Pinar del Río and plays for the Vegueros. This is his fourth Serie Nacional season, and he has also played one Liga Élite season. Before 2026–27 he was a .289 career hitter in the Serie Nacional. His natural position is second base, and Granma notes that he played centre field for Cuba at the last U-23 Pan American qualifier.
He told Granma that he did not know about the record while he was hitting, and that this helped in his fourth and fifth at-bats. He said his immediate goals are the Serie Nacional with Pinar del Río and the U-23 World Cup with Cuba, and that in the longer run he would like to play in a stronger league, naming Japan.
The U-23 World Cup is in Nicaragua from 6 to 15 November. Cuba named a 45-man preselection in September. Our U-23 preselection and fixtures post has the group and the schedule. Cuba’s travelling roster has not been named yet.
What comes next
Pinar del Río’s second subseries of the season is against Isla de la Juventud, from 9 to 12 October. The Serie Nacional 65 schedule lists every subseries to 29 November, and the season format guide explains the groups and the playoff path. Rosters are on our Serie Nacional 65 rosters tracker.
