The second Cuban National Series of baseball semi-final commences on Sunday March 7th, 2021. Matanzas vs Las Tunas for a berth in the Cuban final. Matanzas are the defending Champions while the Leñadores captured the crown in 2019. The winner will advance to face the Granma Alazanes who won the championship in 2018.
Matanzas is well rested having swept the Elephants of Cienfuegos. That series ended on February 16th. The Crocodiles had to wait while a delayed quarter final to determine their opponent played out. Because Granma has already completed their semi-final series they await the winner of this series. Covid-19 has wreaked havoc the the schedule but the playoffs move forward.
The Lumberjacks from Las Tunas will hope to slug their way to the finals. They hit .323 as a team and paced the league with 70 home runs. The Cocodrilos will rely on veteran starting pitching but are no slouches with the bat. They are hoping for big contributions from returning former MLB’ers Yadir Drake and Erisbel Arruebarrena.
The entire 60th Cuban National Series has been played without fans. The playoffs have been contested in a bubble forma due to Covid 19. This is to eliminate any unfair advantage for home teams as travel is not an option. Stay tuned to Cubadugout for feeds for each game in this best of seven series.
