Get inside the Dugout and check out part 1 of my interview with Roberto Ramirez. The Cuban baseball player formerly of Industriales . Roberto Ramirez discusses what it is like growing up as a child in Cuba. His unconventional path to Cuba’s top team Industriales and subsequent time with The Metropolitanos of Havana.
The middle infielder from Havana discusses how he discovered the game and how Cuba’s top league discovered him. Find out about his time in the Cuban National Series and his aspirations for Team Cuba. Industriales are often considered the Yankees of Cuban baseball. The now defunct Metropolitanos shared Havana but not the spotlight. They represent a unique chapter in Cuban baseball history. The Metros were dissolved in 2012 due Cuba redrawing their provincial boundaries. Also know as the Guerreros or Warriors they were a key proving ground for many of Cuba’s top talents. Also find out what the real motivations are for Cuban players to leave Cuba to pursue professional careers.
My introduction to Roberto came in 2015. He was a member of the expansion Ottawa Champions of the CanAm League. The Cuban infielder was one of the first Cubans to infiltrate the independent league but definitely wouldn’t be the last. Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 where we discuss what led him to Canada and why he didn’t end up with the New York Mets. Language often acts as a barrier but Roberto has become fully bilingual and conducted the full interview in English.
