What happened
Cuba closed Group A against the Dominican Republic and won 6–2. It was their fourth straight win after an opening shut-out by the hosts, and it left them level with Mexico at 4–1 at the top of the group. The Dominicans finished 2–3 and did not advance.
Group A finished with Mexico and Cuba both at 4–1, Chinese Taipei 3–2, the Dominican Republic 2–3, and Germany and the Czech Republic both 1–4. The top four went through to the Super Round carrying their results against the other qualifiers with them, which is why Cuba entered that round already behind the teams that had beaten them.
