What happened
Cuba opened the tournament against the hosts at the Estadio Yaquis in Ciudad Obregón and were shut out 5–0. They then won their next four group games — Chinese Taipei 2–1, Germany 10–3, the Czech Republic 7–1 and the Dominican Republic 6–2 — to finish 4–1 and reach the Super Round. Mexico finished 4–1 as well, and went on to take silver.
The tournament was staged across Ciudad Obregón and Hermosillo in the Mexican state of Sonora, with twelve teams split into two groups of six. Mexico were the hosts and the group winners on the tiebreak, and they went all the way to the final on 2 October, where Venezuela shut them out 4–0. Cuba would meet Venezuela once more before the end, and lose that one 11–0.
